“The healots are coming! The healots are coming!” So said Walter Brennan in Frank Capra’s wonderful movie John Doe with Gary Cooper and my very favorite actress Barbara Stanwyck. In it Cooper plays a ballplayer-turned-hobo , who’ll do anything for three squares and a place to sleep. When newspaper publisher D.B. Norton (Edward Arnold), a fascistic type with presidential aspirations, decides to use Doe (Cooper) as his ticket to the White House, he puts Doe on the radio to deliver inspirational speeches to the masses — ghost-written by Mitchell (Stanwyck), who, it is implied, has become the publisher’s mistress. So when Brennan, who is Cooper’s hobo traveling partner talks about healots he’s talking about Norton and their followers, warning Cooper that he is now part of the corruption.

Ok so what has that got to do with those who would rail against technology taking over our lives, corrupting our souls and burning our brain cells up at a rapid rate? Here’s the take away. If you truly are against progress especially regarding electronic devices then throw away your cell phone and your computer and move out into the woods. Going backwards is not going to make our quality of life better, it’s more about monitoring your usage of abuses of technology. Eveery now and then step away from the devices and take a walk. gain some balance,

But what about the children?…they will never know what it’s like to hike and fish and smell the wafting smell of azaleas. Horse pucky as one of my teachers used to say. Our kids are smarter, better educated and move at faster rates then we do so they can do more than we ever did. That means they do both and are adept at each. They time manage better than we did because they have to. It’s progress baby! So you can rail against technology and look like the character in the cartoon above or you can pick up the cell phone and see who’s on the line.

I have heard so many people including my ex-wife say “I cannot use a computer it’s too difficult.”" They say this like it’s a badge of honor. Like clinging to the past is an appropriate way to honor their generation. This is akin to the car enthusiast who buys a car which he drove as a teenager, spends his weekends fixing it up so that it looks just like the one he drove on saturday night oh those many years ago. maybe once or twice a month he’ll take this relic on the road and spit toxic fumes into the grills of cars that trail after him. SWell, this is not the norm.

Although the stereotype persists that older adults are ‘stuck in their ways,’ close-minded and uninterested in learning, the evidence is quite to the contrary. For decades the prevailing thinking in neuroscience was that the adult human brain was essentially immutable, hardwired, fixed in form and function, so that by adulthood we were pretty much stuck with what we had. But with new research has come the realization that the adult brain retains impressive powers of ‘neuroplasticity’ – the ability to change structure and function in response to experience. This, coupled with Boomers thirst for new knowledge and skills, has created a growing popularity for lifelong learning. In fact, the number of college students ages 40 to 64 has jumped by almost 20% to nearly 2 million in the past decade. And those numbers are expected to keep growing as more and more mid-life adults return to school to reinvent themselves, once again.

In an AARP study published in July 2000, 9 out of 10 adults ages 50 and over said they wanted to actively seek out learning opportunities to keep current, grow personally and enjoy the simple pleasure of mastering something new. Research also continues to highlight the importance of lifelong learning as a prescription for a longer, healthier life — keeping minds active and people socially connected and engaged. And while the old-fashioned ways of learning something new — reading a book or taking a class at a local college — are still popular, many mid-life adults are also embracing online education and other new technologies. Today, mid-life adults who graduated from college 30+ years ago are returning to take classes in everything from Italian to modern film, from mastering investing to creating a Web page, to traveling the world. As mid-life adults return to their studies, learning institutions are accommodating them with flexible schedules, satellite campuses, online courses and the like. Mid-life adults are teaching the world that you CAN teach “an old dog new tricks!”

As stewards of lifelong learning, libraries are well positioned to become cornerstone institutions for mid-life adults, productive aging, and the life of the mind IF they can also appeal to them with new, intriguing and flexible approaches to learning.

So put that old mustang back in the garage and plug into the future.

True story (as comics always say) I was in the emergency room at our local hospital. I was waiting to talk to the billing person when two distraught parents came in helping their son to the receptionist area. It looked like he had a head injury because he was loosely bandaged and there was some blood on the gauze surrounding his forehead. Other than that he seemed to be ok. I noticed he was clutching an iPad and cellphone in one hand as he pressed the bandaging to his head. It was a quiet night so he was escorted right in. The parents were asked to wait in the lobby until the doctor had seen the young man. Five minutes later an assistant approached the worried parents and told them their son would be fine. The doctor was stitching him up right now. She then handed them the Ipad and cellphone both of which were obviously damaged. The ipad screen was cracked and shattered and the cellphone was bent. The parents stared at the two gadgets with a longing look, then the husband put his head in his hands and started to cry.

Now I admit I’m extrapolating here but I think we are getting too attached to these devices almost as if they possess personalities of their own. And in fact some do. There are car electronics that talk to you and ask questions about where you want to go and suggest ways of getting there or even alternative places to go and so forth. I’ve noticed that I don’t know anyone’s phone number anymore. Since my iphone does I figure why clutter my brain with such nonsense. But that is just the tip of the iceberg. Following that train of thought soon I’ll be a blabbering fool who know nothing other than talking to my iphone or some other device to help me with my daily tasks. All I’ll have to do is eat, sleep and eliminate waste. Is this the utopia we all want? I have to end this blog now….my iphone just informed me I have a meeting in ten minutes and I haven’t shaved yet.

I read in the paper today about how technology is out pacing human re-invention. What that means is we are headed towards Terminatorville. That time when the computers take over all jobs and functions because they are faster, more accurate and able to think for themselves. We are not keeping pace and the jobs of today are being phased out faster than we can adapt. This seems to be bringing about higher unemployment rates, frustration and homelessness. On 60 Minutes last night there was a segment that stated 25% of all children in the US live in poverty. Are you kidding me? Families are living in trailers or cars and kids have to bath, brush their teeth and go to the bathroom at the closest gas station. What in the world has happened and how can this be remedied? I wish I knew.

But the man in the cartoon asking for metrics on his watermelon in trade for not tweeting about the grocers “fat ass” is going down the wrong path. Older generations integrating into today’s technology frenzy and not being thoughtful about its usage will suffer from the dark side of the internet like teenagers who get “cyberbullied” We need to apply life’s lessons to use technology to benefit our society and not look to the internet to solve our problems why we sip Lattes at Starbucks.

You know that feeling you have when you come up with an idea that is seemingly a great idea for the future but you fail to act on it because you don’t believe enough in yourself or it seems slightly foolish. There are some some people who act on these ideas; Steven Jobs, Gates, Donald Trump, George Lucas, on and on. They move forward despite their fears and concerns ready to take on all comers as they pursue their vision. In a small way I’ve pushed myself into this frame of mine even though it has had adverse effects on my relationships, my financial status sometimes my health. What’s important is being the person I’ve envisioned for myself. At the same time I know now that I need to balance things. We all do. It’s important for all of us to envision the future for ourselves and if most of us can pull together a positive version of ourselves functioning at high levels giving and helping others supporting our families and our friends the world may evolve towards a better future for all of us.

The older the population gets the more older employees will be faced with younger bosses telling them what to do. Personally, I don’t have a problem with this. I had a boss that was twelve years younger than me when I was forty and we worked together brilliantly. Ok so I know that doesn’t always happen, but folks older employees have to adjust and they need to stay current. You need to realte to your younger peers so you need to undertsand their world and not use references to people, events and situations that make you sound like you’ve got a step in the grave! I ran across a story in yesterday’s LA Times saying a lot of workers expect,…that’s right, expect to work into their eighties. Now I’m not advocating this and I hope I am not working for a twenty-eight year old boss when I’m eighty but if I have to I will and dammit if I have to ask my children or grandchildren what the hell is going in the world I will and you better too!

Have you gone into one of your favorite stores and had the “geek squad” or any of the other branded tech guys help you out with your tech coverage? What’s that?…What tech coverage you say? I feel you. I had a digital camera that I bought at a tech store (Best Buy) and bought extra super duper coverage. On a flight to New York the digital screen cracked and the camera was no longer functional. When I took I back it back I explained that my digital camera screen cracked and went dead. I didn’t drop it, hit anybody with it and no one hit my camera. It just happened. Well according to my coverage a “just happened” explanation was not sufficient and they would not cover it. I went over the policy with the head geek and showed him the clause that explained any and all damage to the camera that was internal in nature and was not caused by negligence would covered. (I’m paraphrasing) “Sorry.that is not covered and your interpretation of that clause is incorrect” Though I continued my fight with two or so other geek members and higher ups it was for naught. Now I’m not saying this happens all the time and I’m not saying Best Buy is the only store that has this policy brain freeze. But it does happen and too often it seems. So what’s the answer? Write to your congressman? Report the company to another company who monitors bad company policies? Waste of time. What I did was each time I went back to Best Buy I brought the camera in and started my plea again. After around six months I got just the right geek and she (yes a she) told me sure we can fix that. It’s covered right here under your policy and pointed to the clause I had shown the other geeks times before. She wrote it up and two weeks later my camera was fixed no charge. So, take heart it may not be the company that’s at fault it may be the geek who is serving you.

The question is does technology make us smarter or give us information that allows us to seem so? I’ve noticed that a lot of people use “Tech Jargon” because it would seem to make them more savvy, smarter about new technology, like they know something you don’t. Well they do, but it may not be real knowledge, it may be the illusion of knowledge. I can’t tell how many times I’ve attended a webinar where I thought, now I will learn something that can help me progress towards more business success only to find that that “next” clever person has fooled me again. They have taken bits and pieces of known knowledge and wrapped it up in a nice package and resold it to me. Fortunately I didn’t have to pay for it. Of course I like it towards the end when they have dangled all the tidbits you need in front of your face like sides of beef in a meat locker then tell you the rest can be obtained by making two $97 payments. Will I ever stop being a fool who signs up for webinars that lead nowwhere? Only when I know enough to repackage my own knowledge, set up my own webinar and undercut the market by 25%!

Are we so lazy and unable to make decisions that we are increasingly becoming dependent on phones and tablets to guide us through our everyday lives? Did Columbus need n iPhone to find the new world? Perhaps he would’ve been more accurate in his navigation but what the Hell@ How ’bout Jefferson? Did he need an iPad to write the Declaration of Independence? Well he might’ve been able to edit better and get through his drafts quicker and spell check would’ve been far better than the slave mistress he used to correct his typos…but I’m splitting hairs. Do you think Knute Rockne needed a powerpoint to tell his team to win one for the gipper? Ok so that makes no sense…but neither does handing over our lives to machines. So let’s get some balance here people. As I’ve stated before put down the iPhone for an hour walk outside whether it’s raining or the sun is shining and breath in the fresh air. Look around check out the trees and listen to the sounds of reality. Then head back into your home or office or Starbucks and flip the switch to on and

I just read an article the other day in the LA Times “Parade Magazine” entitled “Born to be Wired”. It talks about how children of today are becoming so wired-up their brains are in danger of being rewired.

Am I surprised by this? Should you be? No is the answer. This is what I would call “Modern Darwinism” or “Technological Evolution” We are becoming what we have feared for so long. A society envisioned by Orwell, James Cameron and Stanley Kubrick among others. This is just the beginning. If you could travel to the future say three hundred years you may find humans that look vastly different than we do today…something out of I, Robot. They wouldn’t be using gadgets, iphones etc anymore …they would be the “gadget”.

There’s nothing we can do about the progression of mankind. That’s a lesson that we humans have learned over and over again despite the feeling that we can change things. So let’s all rest easy, let the media do their thing making a mountain out of a molehill because that’s what they do and we in the meantime should live our life as we see fit with or without technology.
